Learning Design

Banff Executive Leadership Inc. (BEL) is Canada’s foremost expert in competency-based senior Leadership and Governance Development. BEL has been researching and updating competency descriptions for senior Leadership and Governance for over 15 years. It has worked across many sectors in adapting this research into specific application into: TV-Media, Health, Financial Services, High Tech, Oil & Gas and more. In both Governance and Executive leadership BEL has worked with leading companies, Government Departments and NGO’s across Canada, USA, Europe, Asia/Australia and Middle East.

BEL’s learning design is also thoroughly researched and regularly updated; and widely regarded as best-in-class. Past participants from BEL programs around the world have described them as both life-changing and career-enhancing. Hundreds of our alumni now occupy the senior most positions in their organizations and industry sectors.

BEL worked with an ASBOA Task Force of senior school business officials in Alberta to adapt its research to the School Business Officials sector, and also design a compelling curriculum of: action-learning, current/future issues, and practical models. We know first-hand that working with existing senior leaders is not easy! They are demanding, with high expectations for both practicality but also advanced insight beyond what they know and have already experienced. This is also the fun of a high energy, probing, stimulating and engaging learning environment!

The SBO Senior Leadership Competencies Grid describes over 45 competencies in the following categories:

  • Self Knowledge & Personal Integrity
  • Entrepreneurial Growth & Business Strategy
  • Systems Thinking, Collaboration, Risk
  • Sustainable Strategy and Big Picture Thinking
  • Direction Setting & Differentiation
  • Facilitation of Change, Transformation & People Performance
  • Knowledge & Innovation Leverage

The competencies represent both behavioural and values-framed descriptions of real-life practice in a way that SBO’s can clearly assess their current state of practice, and then identify how they want to be performing in the future.
